Seasonal Update #3: Season of Budding

SEASONAL UPDATE

Time definitely passes quick when you're having fun because it's already time for the third Seasonal Update! There's not so much on the OOC front this update but we do have one exciting bit of news - Lynsey will be joining the mod team starting this Season! They'll be helping in a brainstorming and writeup capacity with regards to World Events, Quests and the TDM, so everyone sound off with a warm welcome to them!

This Season's event has some fun stuff I've been looking forward to seeing everyone play with for a while so scroll down quick to the Event Preview and get a peep at what's going on this month!

EVENT PREVIEW

The kingdom of Rosavelle has shaken off the cold weather and decided quite decisively that it's time for love! The Season of Budding brings with it the first major kingdom-wide event: the Courtship Games, a long-standing Rosavellan tradition centered around extremely public expressions of love - ranging from love poem duels to dramatic public serenades and everything in between. Grand gestures are not only encouraged, they are scored. And while nothing that takes place during the Games is binding, history suggests feelings have a habit of becoming inconveniently... real.

The excitement culminates midway during the Season in a spectacular public festival called the Hearts Aflame Faire. On top of all the usual staples of a Rosavelle celebration, the highlight is a wildly popular interactive "trial of devotion" in which brave participants must "rescue" their Laurel-Bound Beloved - carefully selected damsels (gender neutral) in distress (who are, of course, fully consenting volunteers). Some of the most charming visiting nobles may find themselves cast in these roles... with varying degrees of clarity for their rescuers about just how fictional the peril is.

In the meantime, it seems Callie, having uncovered a promising lead on restoring the deteriorating Coronation Crown, is seeking volunteers to compete in the Games on their behalf. It seems they have some sort of plan but, er... what plan, exactly?

WORLD UPDATES

Not long after Budwake ends, the shift into Budding becomes impossible to miss. The last of Fallow's frost finally retreats, though early mornings remain chilly and the first weeks still bring occasional overnight dustings of snow. From there, Rosavelle wakes quickly. Fresh shoots push through newly turned soil, vines reclaim walls and bridges and colour steadily returns as gardens, trees and canal paths grow greener by the day.

The thaw also brings with it plenty of rain, usually just in passing showers that are chilly but surprisingly refreshing. According to locals this is a prelude to the rainy season that won't be too far behind. And as the Azurite Sea warms, new fish return to Rosavelle's waters, filling Marelys' markets and drawing seabirds back to the coast - another sure sign that the cold season has finally passed. Rosavelle is finally awake again!

♡ All Season: The Courtship Games begin across Rosavelle! This long-standing Rosavellan tradition encourages everyone in the kingdom to shoot their shot in dramatic fashion - love poem duels in Primavain, public serenades along Menthward's bridges, swordfights for someone's favour in Bellvine Hill and dramatic confessions both successful and disastrous all over the kingdom. Participation is open to all and while the games are officially non-binding, everyone has a story about an epic love story that started (or ended!) during them.

♡ All Month: Bloomlight Theater hosts the Confession Rehearsals, offering open-stage practice for those planning dramatic declarations later in the season. Results vary wildly in quality and success.

♡ March 1st: Printemps Boutique unveils its Budding Line, featuring lighter fabrics, pastel embroidery and garments designed to pair with gifted accessories for Courtship Games entries.

♡ March 2nd - 8th: Marelys Fish Market celebrates the Return of the Shoals, marking the arrival of warmer-water fish to the Azurite Sea. New seasonal dishes appear across the district and seabirds returning to the docks make the mornings noisier than they've been in months.

♡ March 4th: Rosette Rentals resumes full canal routes after Fallow maintenance. Newly replanted canal edges make scenic rides especially popular with Courtship Games participants seeking inspiration.

♡ March 5th: The Amber Knot introduces its seasonal Sweetheart Loaf, baked in pairs meant to be shared. The staff will politely avert their eyes if you happen to by a single one on your lonesome.

♡ March 9th - 15th: A trade ship from the distant land of Herbstreich docks at Rosavelle for the week with plans to trade goods on the island. A few merchants will also be selling some tasty foods and magical trinkets from their homeland so be sure not to miss out!

♡ March 16th - 19th: Primavain hosts a craft fair where artisans and amateurs alike display handcrafted bracelets, brooches, scarves and flower-crowns made for Courtship Games entries.

♡ March 25th: A sudden warm spell causes several bridges in Menthward to bloom all at once overnight. Florists scramble to manage overgrowth while visitors flock to take photographs beneath cascading flowers.

!❤︎! March 27th - 31st: The Courtship Festival takes place midway through the Games! It's a kingdom-wide festival with food and craft stalls lining the streets. In addition, stages appear throughout Rosavelle for serenades and performances and maybe something a little more exciting too...? For those more inclined to something quieter, there's also flower garland weaving stations lining the canals and evening lantern releases to enjoy. Public declarations of affection are strongly encouraged... if you dare.

♡ April 5th: The first Rainpetal Shower of the season arrives - a brief but heavy afternoon rain followed by drifting petals shaken loose from newly blooming vines. Locals insist walking home in it brings good luck in love.

♡ April 6th - 12th: The Floating Basket vendors introduce First Bloom Specials - fresh fruits, early honey, flower syrups and chilled desserts returning after the long cold months.

♡ April 19th: A minor canal overflow following steady rain leaves parts of Menthward ankle-deep in water for the afternoon. Children and adults alike take advantage, floating paper boats and flower crowns downstream.

♡ April 23rd: Coral farmers report unusually vibrant growth offshore, tinting parts of the shallow waters pink and gold. It's a perfectly scenic spot for a profession of love so make sure to get a spot on a boat tour before they sell out!

♡ April 25th - May 3rd: The Garden Walks of Bellvine Hill open to the public. Visitors can tour private terraces newly restored after Budwake, with owners competing informally for most impressive early blooms.

♡ April 28th - 30th: The Courtship Games formally conclude! Some districts host informal award ceremonies to reward the efforts of anyone who may have struck out this year. In the meantime, among the lovebirds, some partnerships celebrate while others part ways amicably and the gossip train gets going again as the Season of Ripening approaches...!

About: So Em is a girl from a super cool world filled with monsters that hunt emotions, and she's spent most of her life working for the bad guys because one of the bad guys saved her life one time. She has done pretty messed up stuff including but not limited to murder, manslaughter, and helping destroy a school with her boss who can control those monsters, but she's finally ready to admit that maybe all this stuff sucks and she would have a better time being a good guy instead. She's got a magic brain power very similar to Meramancy, except the hallucinations she generates only affect one person at a time. (It's effectively messing around with people's brains, so if your character wouldn't be affected by them, please let me know and at your discretion let her know. You know, whichever's funnier.) I'm also playing her as a trans woman, which might not be explicit in canon, but sometimes RoosterTeeth is wrong about their characters.

Short Term & Future Plans/Wishes: As Chase mentions below, Emerald is in need of a Meramancy teacher so she can try to be better at Meramancy than Haruhi is by the end of the month. She is not backing down from a challenge, but she also thinks that it's not a lot of fun to just cheat and use her Semblance. (Beating Haruhi at this challenge is unrealistic at best, but I want her to at least put in the effort.) Otherwise, in the long term I would love for Emerald to start coming to terms with the entire concept of, like, affection and romance and what it means to actually be cared about and not just be exactly what everybody else wants her to be. I have some ducks in this particular row already, but I'm planning for it to be her major emotional arc for the moment. So if you'd like to contribute to this girl healing from an abusive relationship then I'd love to talk about it with you!

About: You know stories about a hero and his party, going off to defeat the Demon King? Himmel is that hero. But in his case, he's just defeated that Demon King, and is ready to start what comes afterwards - a period of peace, and learning to live within it as the hero who brought it about.

When speaking with him, you wouldn't guess he's the world's greatest hero. He values every interaction, no matter how small, with every person, no matter who it is. He's genuine, warm, caring, and a bit idealistic. He believes heroism is made up of small kindnesses repeated over time, not just grand accomplishments, and so he greatly appreciates helping people with what they need, no matter how small the sidequest.

At his current point, he's looking to learn how to live not as a hero or a warrior, but as a person living in an era of peace. He sees Rosavelle as a welcome way to learn these skills, and will embrace most of it with enthusiasm - except, perhaps, the more romantic portions.

Short Term & Future Plans/Wishes: Short-term, Himmel is GREAT for bonding via everyday activities. He'll happily help with errands, festival jobs, farm work, or anything else - despite being the hero, he does all of this with enthusiasm. On the other hand, he's also great with other warriors or heroes, or really anybody who can slow down a bit and talk the philosophy of peace, of fighting, or of heroism.

Long-term, I'm looking for him to settle in and form some strong platonic bonds. I'm not exactly averse to romance - but Himmel is EXTREMELY dedicated and already in love with a girl back home. (If a wild Frieren ever appears, expect to see him woo her in the most extreme ways possible, and for her to still never notice.)

All that said, he'll settle in well with heroes and warriors, people who need guidance, long-lived beings (though human, he has a lot of thoughts and experience on time and memory,) or anybody struggling with purpose or identity. He's great for gentle emotional connection, quiet encouragement, light humor, and profound conversations that somehow happen over completely normal situations.

Introduction: Sup nerds I'm finally here after waffling over it since the game opened. I'm Owl and I'm an exhausted retail worker who likes crying over video games and the girls in them. Sometimes I watch and read stuff too.

Character Name: Kanade Yoisaki

About: Soggy wet cat with the constitution of a sickly victorian child. Kanade is an extremely talented composer who fell in love with music at a very young age, and knew from when she was five that she wanted to make people happy the same way she made her parents happy when she wrote her very first song. TOO BAD LIFE JUST REALLY WANTED TO KICK HER IN THE GUT REPEATEDLY. Due to some things that absolutely were not her fault, her dad collapsed under the stress of the expectations his clients had for his music, leaving him in a coma and hospitalized when Kanade was in middle school. Kanade completely blames herself for this, and spirals into a deep depression and comes to the conclusion that the only reason that she can justify still living is to compose music that can "save" others, as atonement to what she believed she did to her dad. She later forms a group, Nightcord at 25:00 with several others, including Mafuyu Asahina, the girl she's devoting every bit of herself to save.

She's a sweet kid, really. Endlessly supportive of literally everyone she meets and as kind as she is awkward, but she just REALLY hates herself and is like one bad day from a total crashout hoo boy.

Short Term & Future Plans/Wishes: For short-term plans, I want Kanade to get into Floriomancy! Even putting aside Kanade's focus on being a guide and support for others, her mother was big into growing flowers and filling the house with flowers before she passed. I want Kanade to have a type of magic that can bring out those softer, gentler memories of her family rather than all her trauma related to her dad and music - though, if she can start working through all that, I'd like to have her touch on Meramancy as well. That's a bit of a longer term goal though, since Kanade needs to learn that people can appreciate her and her skills outside of things related to music!!

In terms of relationships, at the moment I'm mostly looking for platonic stuff. Kanade's views of herself and her own feelings are absolutely abysmal, so she might struggle a bit first. My main goal is for Kanade to be able to come to love herself and realize that she is loved as something beyond just a vessel for the salvation of others. She also needs to learn not to feel guilty about how she feels about others, and maybe someone can knock her in the head and help her realize her feelings for Mafuyu may not be platonic at all.

Other than that she will probably stay out of the games! she is still single. she has no interest in big public displays so she'll probably be trying to keep to herself and keep out of the spotlight this season.

in terms of non-immediate plans: She's learning calligraphy from Bulat, and that is Bibliomancy! My ultimate goal for her is to master Bibliomancy while having no idea that's what she's doing because that makes me laugh.

About: IN A WORLD where Earth has been invaded by monstrous aliens that eat people, what survives of humanity is protected by the Seraph Squadron, a group of teenage girls who fight with their ability to make cool sci-fi weapons appear. One of them is Tsukasa, who is somehow an intelligence agent despite being a) like 17 or 18 years old and b) an idiot, and whose real motivation for being there is to find the military officers responsible for murdering her mother and leaving her alone in the world. Her particular squad is also a rock band, because their leader is a weirdo like that.

That paragraph was full of weirdness and silliness, took a sudden turn into sadsville, and then ended with the rock band. I think that means it qualifies as an HBR main story chapter.

Short Term & Future Plans/Wishes: As I alluded above, the past couple of months have been bumpy for me (I'm probably going to appear on the AC strike list), so my top priority is just getting Tsukasa back into things. There are so many fun-looking people she hasn't actually met! I'm also going to be looking to have her start looking into Bloomcraft because she literally has not touched it since the beginning of the game.

Tsukasa is currently single and will be attempting to participate in the Courtship Games from that angle. She does not know what she is doing. Notably, there is a high chance of her knowing exactly what she's doing when the Fun Kidnappings start happening.

Official alternate Haruhi! She's still got energy out the wazoo and is very, very interested in aliens, time travelers, espers and all that fun stuff! She's gone through her own emotional arc of completely getting out of the way of Yuki's relationship with Kyon, and is now having to reckon with her friend leaving for Canada? But, what IS she?

Short Term & Future Plans/Wishes: SO Haruhi kinda made a bet with Emerald that she could clear her in Bloomcraft/Meramancy within March. She'll probably success, but she's going to need to find some time to practice! Luckily she's also planning to actually get in with the RRA in March and will be trying to also learn Infusery so that when grilling season comes around, she's ready. Also, she might be on the look out for outfits for the season (and for others, maybe.) There's quite a bit going on with her mental state at the moment, but that's no fun, so we'll focus on what's nice, yes? Yes. Always up for more people to bring along for shenanigans!

With everything going on, she'll be more than happy to assist anyone with their rehersals and get ready for the GAAAAAMES.

Canon: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

➤ About: Charming, quietly funny man from a tragic French game seeks company and good conversation. God won't let him die, and he has a lot of feelings about it.

Verso's naturally empathetic, creative, and attuned to others. But after a 100+ years of existential anguish, surviving a post‑apocalyptic nightmare, and burying people he still blames himself for, he's... tired.

At the canon point I took him from, he's also in flux. He hasn't yet found the capacity to picture a better future for himself, but he is at least trying to leave the door open. He also has the drive to make life a bit better for the people around him, even at his own expense.

Despite looking like a human version of Shadow the Hedgehog, Verso catches feelings for others quicker than you'd think. On the other hand, because he's still in flux and hates burdening others with his existentially messed-up issues, he lets other people set the pace and usually defaults to letting romantic relationships stay as undefined situationships. (This has bitten him in the ass before, and it probably will again. Oh, Verso...)

A few notes!

🎹 The Unbirthday Party on the 22nd was a success! If you haven't already, feel free to sign the Guest Book, even if you didn't get a chance to TL or tag out. Handwaving attendance is fine! It can still serve as a springboard into new CR.

🎹 Going forward: he and Monoco will definitely host more mingles. They probably won't be as big as the Unbirthday Party, but they should still give people chances to build CR and practice Bloomcraft. Want your character to volunteer to help put these together? Let's talk about it!

🎹 Speaking of volunteers, Verso will thank everyone who helped make the Unbirthday Party happen. I'll tag people in Discord when the message goes out.

🎹 Early March: He will officially move to a rustic seaside cottage in the quiet part of Marelys. Turns out 67 years as a war vet and refugee in a post‑apocalyptic world doesn't make someone well suited to city life -- so he's choosing a slower-paced area to decompress during his downtime. He will still visit the castle regularly as an advisor and, uh... bunk in the barracks when duty calls?? That sounds dirty, but y'all know what I mean....... ;; but also I guess it could be dirty too

(On the bright side, the extra space means he'll finally get serious about his choo-choo collection. I'm thinking he'll end up making a whole train scene with cute tiny wooden figures to represent each of his CR, but that'll be a long-term side project.)

That said, his inner theater kid loves playing the Hero, so I could see him getting involved with the Laurel-Bound Beloved stuff. (Really, though, he'll volunteer for whatever people ask him to help with...)

In the meantime, he'll be wholly focused on making great experiences for others.

I overextended myself in December and January and messed up my shoulder. I'm waiting to start physical therapy. Because of that, I'll need to be more careful about how I spend RP time. I'll probably stick mostly to closed prompts for Verso until I get the ball rolling for PT, but I'm 100% open to plotting with new and current CR alike!

Through hard work and a small crush, has gotten onto a more normal schedule, and she's working out to try and get a little more physically fit. Hums and sings when she doesn't think anyone is watching, or when only people she trusts are watching and she's relaxed enough. Once you've gotten through her prickly exterior, caring and will fight for you with everything she has. Jaded after several years of being beaten down over her lack of artistic talent, but improving enough that she's starting to believe it herself. Working hard on Bloomcraft and training a variety of disciplines; it's balancing a bit of a chip on her shoulder.

If you catch her on a good day, Ena's easy to talk to, but if you make her mad - or if she's already mad - she can be a lot to deal with, and she's got a lot of snark in her. She's mellowed a lot, though, and she's working hard to continue mellowing because she's tired of being an asshole all the time. She'll take a bit of time to warm up to you, but once she has, she'll make a point to notice you in a crowd.

Short Term & Future Plans/Wishes: Two-thirds of Ena's circle just rolled in last week and she is. On cloud nine about it, now that she can stop working herself into a tizzy about her feelings for them. But! That also means the declaration of the Courtship Games takes on a much, much deeper meaning for her, and she's going all-out. And given she's got more feelings than that, she has a lot of love to give, and a lot to express. Challenge her to a love-off at your own peril! (warning: peril in limited supply, not all orders will be fulfilled) By which I mean, challenge her at will, because she's going to run up against the limits of her ego faster than she realizes. And should she be selected to rescue a Laurel-Bound Beloved during the Faire... well. It depends on how much she knows. If she thinks there's any level of actual danger? The gloves are off and she's turning the kingdom upside down to search for her Beloved (no matter who it is). If she knows better, she'll put on a show while she hunts, but she's still not going to leave someone hanging! This entire business is going to make her a touch more affectionate, but the Faire will put her into mineminemine mode and getting in her way may be dangerous.

Ena's still pursuing as much Bloomcraft as she can shake a paintbrush at; she's really hoping she can actually do some painting this Season without getting distracted again, and she accidentally(?) learned Infusery for the Unbirthday party, but she's mostly focusing on Meramancy for a variety of projects and Imprintwork for a few things she wants to forge. also there's the other thing she would probably be suited for that I should be getting her

I committed Ena to a lot of little stuff in Wilting; this time I'm mostly going to play it by ear, but there's a lot of stuff in the World Updates she'd be interested in, so if anything catches your eye, please, let's figure something out! If you need someone to split a snack, go clothes shopping, sketch your best side, or give you Bloomcraft tips, Ena's your girl.

Anything Else?: Ena's birthday, snapping it to the Rosavellan calendar, is the last day of Budding! She's already told at least one person but she's not sure she cares enough to have a party, the last one got kind of wild?

About: Archer is a spirit who professionally goes to fight fictional heroes from a different era to the death to get their hands on a magic wish cup and he's probably the snarkiest, meanest one of them all. He is a deathly serious man who has a lot of underlying issues which prevent him from engaging his feelings in healthy ways and he's a tremendous hypocrite who'll feed you, clothe you and tell you to never trust him.

Short Term & Future Plans/Wishes: Archer's moving out at the start of March and he is not telling anyone. He's going to live in Menthward in a nondescript home that he'll be dressing up to look sketchy. I'll be putting up a log for him after this weekend to go over what that nonsense entails but otherwise, here are his generalized plans, whether or not I play them in threads:

⚔️ Sign himself up to save mumblemumbleAi during the Laurel-Bound event because him being in denial isn't enough to dissuade muscle memory

⚔️ Hook himself up with some awesome fishing gear and annoy the hell out of the locals as he tries to out-fish them

⚔️ Unashamedly buy a loaf of Amber Knot bread for himself so he can put together how to make it for himself

⚔️ Spend most of his money buying up imported ingredients as trading ships come in

⚔️ Helping prune Menthward(and his tiny house, now that I think about it)

⚔️ Help cater for the Courtship Festival. No secret plan here, just part-time work...

⚔️ Putting together an oven in his house to start selling baked goods for local shops(3-D printing helps)

⚔️ Accidentally outing himself as a red head the second he hits Infusery 4 and reverses all the damage he's done to himself in a single shot of espresso

She's a bit of a disaster! And she also has Fae Eyes which let her see the "truth", be it the true thoughts and meaning behind a person's words or seeing through magical influences. About: Uther is the closest thing his country has to a king and his goal in life is to replace the peerage with a more merit-based system. Tragically, he dies of illness only a couple years into his reign in canon, but thanks to Callie's timely invitation and the fine healers in their employ, this is no longer a problem.

He's a confident and opinionated man, used to keeping people at arm's length with enough personability for it to not be too obvious that that's what he's doing. The joys of being a born and raised politician.

Short Term & Future Plans/Wishes:
-Physical Training: Uther is far enough in his illness recovery to start working out to get back into proper knightly shape! He'll be out at the Dawnfield grounds early every morning doing drills. Somebody should explain modern gyms to him so he can start making use of Gold Ship's gym.

-Bloomcraft: Uther is going to start experimenting with Bibliomancy and Meramancy in particular. Testing some limits, seeing what he can get away with, etc.

-The Courtship Games: Uther has a guy back home, so he has no intentions on serious courtship here, but messing around for fun and competition is another matter entirely. He will happily make up some complete bullshit out of pure love of the game. Not unsolicited because he's not a creep, but if anybody else is also in it to win it, no real feelings involved, then he's down to clown.

-Laurel-Bound Beloved: I signed Uther up for this because I think I'm hilarious.
